ARCH 113 STUDIO I : GEOMETRY
The semester began with geometric construction and analysis of the geometries inherent in provided images, using only a pencil, compass, and straightedge. Then students composed fields of geometric figures. Geometric construction set up the structure that defined the field; students explored the effects of cutting and folding techniques to reveal the field in three dimensions.

ARCH 113 STUDIO I : ELEMENTS
Through a series of exercises in drawing and physical model-making, students explored the process of moving from two to three dimensions, and the ways in which the fundamental elements of architecture (line, plane, and volume) can be composed to create different spatial conditions. Students constructed a field derived from an eight-inch square (cropped from images of abstract paintings provided) and interpreted the implied space of that field, moving from drawing, to low relief, to eight-inch cubed spatial compositions (physical models), then represented the compositions through orthographic, axonometric, and perspective drawings.

ARCH 113 STUDIO I : STAIR SPACE
The final project for the first semester was the design of a stair space in a hypothetical narrow urban infill site. Using the fundamental elements of lines, vertical and horizontal planes, and volumes, students were tasked to create a series of spatial experiences that encourage horizontal and vertical movement throughout the site.

ARCH 114 STUDIO II : COLOR STUDIES
The first two weeks of the semester engaged students in the study of color through the collaging of print material. Initial studies illustrated color terminology and were followed by a final collage that interpreted the color composition of a 2D work of art.

ARCH 114 STUDIO II : PRECEDENT STUDY, WOOD BUILDINGS
Students researched, documented, and analyzed wood construction building precedents. They further developed their skills of orthographic projection, were introduced to analytical tools through the development of analytical diagrams and models, and constructed detailed basswood framing models.

ARCH 114 STUDIO II : COMMUNITY SPACE
The project explored the design of a small urban community space using wood construction. Each studio section used a different site in a Chicago neighborhood, and the activities of the community space were specific to the location. The emphasis of the project was on developing site strategies, concept development, and design process.
